Nov. 9, 2016—Houston Texans linebacker and special teams player Brian Peters visited Spillane Middle School on Oct. 8 to award sixth-grade math teacher Julie Tally as one of First Community Credit Union (FCCU)’s Stars in the Classroom.

Tally was nominated for the award by seventh-grade student Connor Carpenter, who had her as a teacher last year.

According to Amber Magee, assistant vice president of marketing for FCCU, Stars in the Classroom received nearly 400 applications. Of those, only 10 winning educators in the greater Houston area were chosen.

In his nomination letter, Carpenter wrote that, due to Tally’s influence, he went from being a student who disliked math to one who earned Commended marks on the STAAR Math assessment.

“This is probably the highest honor I have ever received,” said Tally, a former CFISD Spotlight Teacher at Millsap Elementary School. “To get an acknowledgement from your own student, to know you changed their lives in some way – that’s why I teach. It’s just an amazing honor.”

As part of the award, Tally also earned a commemorative Texans football and two tickets and sideline passes to the Texans vs. San Diego Chargers game on Nov. 27 at NRG Stadium. She and her principal, Mike Maness, will be invited back to NRG Park in the spring for a Stars in the Classroom banquet with featured guest Brian Cushing, Texans linebacker.
