Oct. 31, 2016—The Cypress Woods High School girls’ cross country team and five individual runners representing four CFISD high schools qualified for the UIL Cross Country State Championships at the Region III-6A Cross Country Championships, held Oct. 29 at Kate Barr-Ross Park in Huntsville.

Cypress Woods finished third overall with a team score of 104, behind regional champion Seven Lakes (65) and runner-up Kingwood (81). Wildcat runners contributing to the team score were sophomore Mary Rodriguez (14th overall, 19:43.99), junior Lina Spjut (16th, 19:50.87), freshman Michelle Easley (17th, 19:51.52), sophomores Naomi Davis (33rd, 20:26.68) and Amber Byrd (50th, 21:01.62). Sophomore Faithe Green (21:14.26) and freshman Julia Ameringer (21:17.79) will also run with the team at the state meet.

“We had a huge race out of Michelle who latched on to Lina and Mary and just really gave us a much-needed boost. She certainly had a huge race when we needed it most,” said Greg Zarate, Cypress Woods head cross country coach. “That gave us a solid 1-2-3 punch with all three finishing in the top 17, which was huge for us.

“I couldn't be any happier for these young ladies,” Zarate continued. “They told me last year at regionals when they finished fifth and just missed state that they would do everything and anything to make it this year. They have put in the work and made the sacrifices to get the team to state. We had some very gutsy performances at regionals and they stepped it up when needed. I am so proud of them and look forward to them racing in two weeks.”

Individual girls’ runners who also qualified for state are:

  • Megan Derouen, Cypress Creek junior – 11th overall, 19:40.66;
  • Madelyn Taylor, Cypress Ranch sophomore – 18th overall, 19:54.30; and
  • Marina Taylor, Cypress Springs junior – 22nd overall, 20:00.75.

In the boys’ race, Langham Creek High School was CFISD’s top-placing team in seventh place with a score of 167. Cypress Woods placed ninth with a score of 249 and Cypress Ranch was 13th with 378.

CFISD’s two boys’ state-qualifying runners are:

  • Allen Gonzalez, Cypress Springs sophomore – 14th overall, 16:32.26; and
  • David Zavala, Langham Creek senior – 17th overall, 16:35.61.

The UIL Cross Country State Championships will be held Nov. 12 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
